Students honor veterans

By Stacey Creasy Pilot News
Students across Marshall County are taking time to honor the nation's veterans today.

School administrators said it is important to take time out to recognize the holiday because many of the children have a family member that has been in the military, or is serving in the military now.

It can also be a scary time for small children who go home and hear about war, and people dying in battle in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"That is a good reason for this to be a holiday where kids are in school," said Webster Elementary Principal Donna Burroughs. "They can learn much more about what the holiday means."

Webster's Veteran's Day service will began at 1:30 p.m. A local Boy Scout troop will present the colors during the ceremony while the students and choir will sing patriotic songs. There will also be some readings on Veteran's Day.

One of the highlights of the program will be a Vietnam veteran, who will explain the students what the flag means to him.

At Menominee Elementary, Principal Melody Kruger said the students will also take part in readings and sing patriotic songs. The colors as well as the flag will be presented along with other events.

"Our program will be 20-25 minutes," Kruger said. "It is not lengthy, but it is powerful."

Kruger said the program is also designed to "open an avenue so the children will go home and talk about Veteran's Day with their families."

There are also programs scheduled at Washington and Jefferson elementary schools that include singing patriotic songs and readings. At Washington, the students will be allowed to wear red, white and blue clothing today.

Plymouth Mayor Bonnie Yeazel was also scheduled to go to Jefferson Elementary today as the school's special reader.

In Argos a video has been produced for the entire student body to see today. Argos Junior-Senior High School Principal Larry Wolff said the video includes patriotic music from the school choir, students have recorded Veteran's Day readings along with additional information about the meaning behind Veteran's Day.

In Bremen, the eighth grade class of Bremen Elementary Middle School will be presenting their 10th annual Veterans' Day program, titled "Through the Eyes of Old Glory".

The hour-long presentation was held at the Bremen High School Bowen Auditorium.

The Tributes to Veterans were held at 12:45 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

There are activities planned at Culver schools. No one from the school who is working with the events could be reached for comment.
